Strong safeguards for workers

This week I spoke in the European Parliament on the measures that need to be taken to ensure fairness and that employees are not exploited. You can read and watch my speech below. 

"Loopholes in EU legislation, and the weakening of collective agreements, have led to the exploitation of workers by unscrupulous employers and unfair competition.

Too often such practices have fuelled local frustration, xenophobia and hatred towards migrant workers. 

I firmly believe that social dumping contributed to our Brexit vote. Many of my constituents felt their livelihoods and living standards were being threatened by the perceived and real undercutting of wages and poor labour rules.

It is time to address these loopholes, particularly for posted workers & agency workers rules.

It is time to ensure that equal pay for equal work in the same place applies for all workers across Europe.

If we don’t tackle this issue, the consequences for the EU could be disastrous, and I fear will threaten the very existence of the union."
