SSI have announced that iron and steel production will be mothballed at Redcar. Anna Turley, the Labour MP, has called on the Government to step in and save the plant and safeguard the jobs.
Jude Kirton-Darling said "Anna Turley and the local council are working hard to save this plant and the Government need to step up and help. As MEPs we have been asking the European Commission to tackle the dumping of cheap steel from China. This influx of cheap steel is hurting steel works across Europe, other governments have stepped in to help and yet when the Chancellor could have stood up for Teesside last week in China he apparently never mentioned it. In fact he did the exact opposite and gave valuable contracts for HS2 and nuclear power stations to Chinese industry. The government have got to show that they are on the side of the people of Redcar. There are no excuses for inaction and if they don't do anything they will never be forgiven.
Paul Brannen MEP added "The steel works are vital to Teesside. It provides good well paid jobs to thousands of people directly and indirectly. Other European Governments have stepped in to support their steel industries and ours needs to do the same.
