Jude on the Meaningful Vote outcome

15 January 2019

Jude Kirton-Darling MEP: “The result of the 2016 referendum was in part a vote to give Parliament more sovereignty. Theresa May’s failed Brexit deal is exactly that - Parliament is at last asserting its own power. As elected representatives trusted with evaluating the evidence and coming up with solutions for their constituents, MPs did the right thing in defending the public’s legitimate concerns about the deal.

“Article 50 was triggered prematurely and the process has become excruciating as the government have failed to unite the country or even the Cabinet. The clock rapidly ticks down. By adopting contradictory red-lines, the Prime Minister laid the seeds of this failure and ensured that the negotiations couldn’t deliver a good outcome for the country. The government is clearly incapable of governing and must step aside. The next immediate and crucial step is for MPs to accept that delaying Article 50 is vital, as there is simply not enough time to process all the legislation in Westminster needed in any scenario.”

Paul Brannen MEP: “The outcome of today’s vote comes as no surprise and MPs were right to vote against such a botched Brexit deal. We need to be realistic about the incredibly damaging effect that Theresa May’s Brexit would have on the country and more so on the North East which, as we have seen from the Government’s own analysis, would be hardest hit by any Brexit outcome.

“The road to Brexit has been an agonising one and we have been dragged along by an incompetent and split government.  Given the scale of the Government’s defeat, it is clear that it’s impossible for Theresa May to continue leading Brexit negotiations or to continue as Prime Minister. This is why we back a vote of no confidence in the Government - a capable and effective one is now long overdue."
