The government's chaotic handling of Brexit risks getting even worse with Theresa May antagonising our EU partners and taking Britain in the wrong direction by cosying up to Donald Trump, Labour MEPs have warned.
If it isn't bad enough that she is pulling us out of the Single Market and Customs Union, whatever the cost - the cost in jobs, the cost in trade, the cost to our economy - the prime minister's America first policy is likely to make the situation even worse. For example, she has refused to say the NHS is off the table in any US-UK trade deal; far from Brexit resulting in an extra £350 million a week for the NHS, leaving the EU could result in its privatisation by the back door.
Whether she calls it 'soft', 'hard' or 'red, white and blue', Theresa May's chaotic, Trumpian Brexit raises more questions than it answers.
Responding to Theresa May’s key Brexit speech, Glenis Willmott MEP, Labour’s Leader in the European Parliament, said:
“So now we know: Theresa May has given up on the Single Market before negotiations have even begun, whatever the cost - the cost in jobs, the cost in trade, the cost to our economy. Britain is leaving the European Union, but the choices about how we leave will sit with Theresa May and the government - and this looks like a Tory plan that will make most people poorer.
“And despite all of this, we still don’t have clarity on what she actually wants to achieve in terms of our future trading relationship with Europe. So despite the all the talk we still face uncertainty, putting even more jobs at risk.”
