Jude and Paul welcome Keir Starmer's brexit plan

Jude and Paul welcome today’s speech by Shadow Brexit Minister Keir Starmer MP setting out Labour's plan for Brexit. This plan puts jobs and the economy at its heart and looks to bring the country together, instead of a destructive and divisive Tory Brexit.

Keir Starmer MP said  “We believe in building a new relationship with the EU – not as members but as partners. Where jobs, the economy and retaining the benefits of the Single Market and the Customs Union are our priority. Where hard-fought workplace rights and the environment are protected. Where we are an open, outward looking country. Where EU nationals living here are guaranteed their rights and can live in certainty that Brexit will not affect them.”

Jude Kirton-Darling MEP added:  “I am extremely pleased to hear Keir Starmer restate Labour’s commitment to EU nationals already living in the UK, pledging to guarantee their rights on day one of a new Labour government. Many EU nationals already call the North East home and their right to continue to do so should be left in no doubt. These are people, families, colleagues and neighbours who make a huge contribution to the North East. They are not bargaining chips to be traded with”

Paul Brannen MEP said “As a manufacturing and exporting region unrestricted access to the EU single market is essential to the North East. I have heard this myself from business of all sizes across our region. Trade with the EU makes up 58% of North East exports and any restrictions would be devastating for our local economy, jobs and the prosperity of everyone that lives here”

Do you think the North East needs its own voice in the EU exit negotiations?
