Car manufacturing supports 799,000 jobs across Britain says Alan Johnson

03 March 2016

Alan Johnson, Chair of Labour In for Britain, welcoming the news that the UK Car Industry body, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) are supporting the UK’s EU membership, said:

“Car manufacturing is a vital UK industry, supporting 799,000 jobs across Britain. The SMMT are clear that the UK’s continued membership of the European Union is vital to British jobs, investment and exports.

“Manufacturers and would-be investors will understandably be concerned about the prospect of tariffs on their exports to Europe. Whatever trade arrangement the UK arrived at with the EU after leaving, it is clear that our position would be weaker.

“As this campaign continues, the evidence is overwhelming, for jobs, trade, exports and working people. That’s why Labour will be campaigning to stay In, because Britain is better off as part of the European Union.”
